Where to Take Household Hazardous Waste in Alameda County

Alameda County residents can take eligible household hazardous waste to facilities in Oakland, Hayward, Livermore, or Fremont. StopWaste lists this residential service as free, with no appointment required during regular operating hours. Check the current facility schedule and item rules before your trip.

Old paint, cleaners, and garden chemicals should have their own disposal plan during a cleanout. Set them aside before loading ordinary furniture, boxes, and other nonhazardous items for removal.

Choose the location that fits both your route and the actual opening day. A nearby facility is not useful if it is closed when you have access to a vehicle. Build the drop-off into your cleanout schedule before the final removal appointment.

Check your items before you pack

StopWaste’s accepted-material list includes many household paints, automotive fluids, cleaners, pesticides, fluorescent lamps, electronics, and qualifying batteries. The permanent HHW facilities do not accept everything: medications, large appliances, construction debris, and large lithium batteries need other arrangements.

Check the full accepted and prohibited list for your specific item. Battery size and type matter, and some unusual materials require further clarification. If a container is unmarked, leaking, swollen, or otherwise damaged, call the HHW hotline at (800) 606-6606 before handling or transporting it.

Make a brief inventory from labels you can read safely. Note the product, approximate remaining amount, and container condition. Do not open an unknown container to identify it by smell or combine leftovers to save space.

Confirm eligibility and who must deliver the waste

Bring proof of your Alameda County address, such as a qualifying ID, utility bill, or rental agreement. The residential program requires the household resident to transport the waste; a hired hauler or other third party cannot deliver it through that service.

This distinction matters when arranging a garage cleanout. Booking junk removal does not make household hazardous waste eligible for transport by that crew to the resident-only facility.

Businesses and rental-property owners should check their applicable programs. StopWaste offers a separate landlord service with its own eligibility and procedures, including a limited owner-occupied-property exception. Confirm your situation with the program instead of assuming a residential street address establishes eligibility.

Prepare the load according to program instructions

StopWaste posts a total limit of 15 gallons or 125 pounds per visit, with individual containers limited to 5 gallons or 50 pounds. Keep different products separate in sturdy, sealed containers and follow the program’s packing instructions. Ask the hotline how the limits apply if your load is mixed or difficult to estimate.

Keep labels attached. If an original container is deteriorating, get instructions before transferring its contents. Secure acceptable containers so they cannot tip, and keep the waste accessible in the trunk or cargo area. At the facility, stay in your vehicle and let staff unload.

Do not leave materials outside a closed collection site. A completed cleanout is not worth turning an unaccepted load into an unattended hazard.

Coordinate hazardous waste with the rest of the cleanout

Use separate appointments or destinations when necessary. For example, approved household chemicals may go through the resident drop-off program while an unwanted couch and broken shelving are evaluated for a hauling appointment.

Tell every provider what you have, even when the containers are small. Avoid hiding chemicals inside sealed boxes marked as general junk. Clear separation makes it easier to obtain an accurate quote and identify what must remain for another service.

The program says the resident must transport it. Plan your hazardous-waste route separately from a nonhazardous junk pickup.
